Revitalizing Workspaces with Experiential Graphics

Enhancing Community and Workspace Engagement The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research (OICR), housed in the MaRS building within Toronto’s Discovery District, is an independent, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to advancing cancer research from concept to clinical application. OICR drives innovations in cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment. Its research spans small molecules, biologics, stem cells, imaging, genomics, informatics, and biocomputing, from initial studies through to adoption in the clinic.Entro previously collaborated with OICR to develop a comprehensive signage program for their MaRS tower office. In this project, part of a re-imagining of the workspace for hybrid work, we were tasked with creating environmental graphics for three key areas: the reception area, the lobby, and the building’s second level. The primary goal of these graphics was to revitalize the workspace, encouraging staff to return to the office and creating a stronger sense of community, while also communicating OICR’s mission to visitors.

An Abstract Design

OICR requested abstract graphics that would invite personal interpretation, avoiding traditional scientific images such as microscopes or cells, which are common visual elements in the scientists’ daily environment. Each floor’s design reflects a unique purpose within the building. For the first level, frequented by clients and officials, the space was designed to be more subdued and modest, while still effectively communicating the organization’s purpose. The second level, primarily for staff, features brighter, more dynamic graphics to inspire energy and engagement.

A consistent design flows across both floors, with a subtle colour shift reflecting the change in tone. The first-floor palette aligns with brand colors in blues, greens, and yellows, while the second floor introduces vibrant purples, fuchsias, and oranges, marking a transition from modest to lively.

By thoughtfully integrating branding, colour, and design the OICR project supports community, collaboration, and workplace identity.
