Studio Museum in Harlem

A Museum with a Mission

For more than five decades, the Studio Museum in Harlem has been a vital home for artists of African descent. Founded in 1968, it has championed creativity, dialogue, and visibility for Black artists while shaping conversations in New York City and beyond.Culturally specific institutions like the Studio Museum play an essential role in public life. They preserve stories that might otherwise go untold, celebrate identities that have influenced history, and create space for communities to see themselves reflected in the cultural landscape. The Museum embodies this purpose and remains one of the most significant places Where Black Art Lives. After eight years of transformation, the Museum reopened in November 2025 in a new home designed by Adjaye Associates with Cooper Robertson as executive architect. The building serves as both an architectural statement and an act of cultural preservation, deeply rooted in Harlem’s streetscape and community.

Digital Communication Integrated Throughout the Experience

The Museum engaged Entro to shape a cohesive digital signage strategy and create visual templates that would guide visitors throughout the building. Our work focused on how communication could meet visitors’ needs at different points in their journey while reinforcing the Museum’s mission and visual identity.

Through visitor experience analysis, communication review, and benchmarking against comparable institutions, we defined a framework for digital touchpoints that share exhibition information, program details, announcements, donor recognition, and wayfinding. Each template was built to align with the Museum’s brand and website standards, ensuring a consistent and intuitive experience. The result is a flexible system that empowers the Museum to manage evolving exhibitions and programs.

Being part of the Studio Museum’s reopening was truly an honor. This project gave us the opportunity to bring the Museum’s brand into the built environment in a way that feels both authentic and intuitive. By pairing our wayfinding expertise with their digital needs, we developed a digital sign system that guides visitors while reinforcing the Museum’s identity at every touchpoint. The collaboration was thoughtful and purpose-driven, and it felt meaningful to design a system that supports artists, staff, and visitors alike. I’m proud that the final experience strengthens the Museum’s presence throughout its new home and reflects the vibrancy and resilience of the community it has always championed.

Design-Led and Culturally Rooted

The visual language of the digital signage system draws directly from the Museum’s brand, architecture, and community. A three-column grid reflects the structural rhythm of the building, establishing consistency across all screens. Colorful linear “threads,” inspired by Harlem’s energy, introduces movement and helps guide the eye to important information.

A black background provides a neutral stage that allows artwork and information to stand out, while selective color and horizontal motion create continuity with the Museum’s broader digital identity.

The motion language also incorporates the signature “chatter” animation from the Museum’s website, intentionally mirroring the dynamic community of Harlem. The result is a flexible yet distinctive system rooted in place, purpose, and cultural expression.

The Museum’s history is inseparable from Harlem’s creative and cultural identity. Our work supports that legacy by shaping a digital communication layer that feels authentic to the institution and aligned with its role as a cultural anchor.

The displays act as a bridge between the Museum’s visual identity and its day-to-day messages, helping the Museum communicate with visitors in a way that is clear, consistent, and grounded in a strong sense of place.

Client Perspective

“The Studio Museum in Harlem’s collaboration with Entro has been rooted in laying the groundwork for the Museum’s historic reopening. Through their pioneering use of digital tools and their expertise in digital experiences, Entro has been an essential partner in the Museum’s efforts to reintroduce itself and its new building to a broad public. We are grateful to have worked with a company that forefronts accessibility and experiential placemaking, which has in turn enabled the Museum to further engage with its visitors beyond what’s on view.”
