The first project to benefit from the wayfinding system is Inova Health Center–Oakville – a new 100,000 square-foot, four-story medical facility. As the first of three planned developments, each with a unique clinical focus, the new Health Center serves as a gateway to the Inova system for both current residents and newcomers. Architecturally, the building features softly curving architecture and light-filled interiors that contribute to a calm, healing environment. Services include an emergency department, imaging services, ambulatory surgery, primary care, and medical offices.
Building Familiarity Across a System
The cornerstone of the wayfinding master plan was to ensure consistency across the entire Inova system. Whether a patient visits one building or multiple campuses, the wayfinding experience should feel familiar and intuitive. This means consistent signage design, placement, and messaging from the parking lot to the physician’s office. We focused on simplifying terminology, standardizing department and service names, and using a clear, readable design that reduces confusion.
A unified system not only helps people find their destinations – it creates a visual and experiential identity for Inova. Visitors should know when they’ve arrived at an Inova facility. This overall consistency reinforces trust and reduces the stress of navigating a new environment, especially when patients are moving between buildings or services.
Our plan prioritized accessibility for a wide range of users, including individuals with different physical and cognitive abilities. We relied on proven best practices in visual recognition, accessibility codes, and environmental integration. Working directly within architectural models, we placed signs with precision to ensure optimal visibility and contextual harmony.

Our plan considered every element of the journey—from exterior vehicular signs to pedestrian wayfinding, interior directories, and identification signage. We drew on our experience working with large academic, workplace, and airport campuses to develop a system that is both comprehensive and adaptable.
Recognizing that capital projects are often phased, we developed standards documentation and a design system that allows for gradual rollout. This flexibility ensures the wayfinding system can be scaled over time, as new buildings are constructed or existing facilities are upgraded.

Inova’s wayfinding master plan is more than a navigation tool—it’s a physical expression of their values. It communicates Inova’s commitment to accessibility, and reflects a modern, patient-first approach that considers the whole experience.
