Williston Basin International Airport Reflects the Outdoors

Story

The new Williston Basin International Airport, which opened its runways late in 2019, nestles perfectly into the natural landscape of North Dakota. Designed by Alliiance Architects, the terminal’s earthy tones, natural materials, and horizontal lines evoke the surrounding grasslands.

We designed the environmental graphics program, consisting of identification, directional, and digital signage, to integrate with the simplicity of the architecture’s wood, stone, and stainless steel. In the open, airy terminal navigation is fairly intuitive, so we kept the signage minimal so as not to distract from the expansive outdoor views.

One of our favourite features of this airport is the children’s play area. We had a lot of fun creating the illustrations – and what better way to pass the time than to learn a fun fact or two about the animals that live in the prairies, wetlands, and badlands of North Dakota?
